His swollen black eyes and R.E.M.’s non sequiturs, plus the capering 130-kilo infant on the viewer, plus Day and Gompert conversing while both staring into space, all backed by the blurps and wonks of Gene M.’s hand-held game in the office, give the dark living room a dreamy and almost surreal atmosphere.
Context
Carlisle tags his Dreams thread here "as much for the staging as for Green's R.E.M. cries": the section reads to him like "an avant-garde film" — the sleeper's non sequiturs, the rubber-infant-masked Mr. Bouncety-Bounce, two people talking about psychic horror while staring straight ahead — the waking room itself gone oneiric. The room-as-dream is his reading; DFW's sentence is quoted doing the work.
