Gompert and Day and the billowing shape
0245h., Ennet House, the hours that are truly wee. Eugenio M., voluntarily filling in for Johnette Foltz on Dream Duty, is out in the office playing some sort of hand-held sports game that blips and tweets. […] Cartridges not allowed after 0000h., to encourage sleep. Sober cocaine- and stimulant-addicts sleep pretty well by the second month, straight alcoholics by the fourth. Abstinent pot- and tranq-addicts can pretty much forget about sleep for the first year.
Context
The fullest single statement of the sleep-economy Dream Duty exists to police: actuarial tables for when each Substance gives sleep back. It's the staging for the whole insomniac nocturne — Gompert folded forehead-to-foot, Day in his velour robe, Erdedy smoking, Green the only sleeper in the room (and paying for it, below), two nights after the Lenz/Gately street catastrophe. Dream-policy as subject per the scope ruling; Day's billowing shape, the scene's famous centerpiece, is waking horror and stays excluded.
