Context
Two circles a page apart in Hal's first-person section: the junior-tennis uppers-then-downers "vicious circle" (p. 67), and then, in his recurring dream of the impossibly convolved court, Avril seated in her umbrella's small circle of shadow (p. 68) — the chemical loop and the maternal one, side by side.
