Context
Pemulis, going through the cartridges in Hal's room, reads the Sunstrand advertorial's title as "Annular Fusion Is Our Fiend" — the filmography (p. 986) says "Friend." The print really does read "Fiend," and the next paragraph carries Hal's correction ("'It's Friend, not Fiend. Either it's mislabeled or the label's peeling."), so the slippage is an in-world mislabel Pemulis reads off the case. The friend-to-fiend slide is the Concavity plot in one vowel.
