The program's core epistemology — compliance precedes belief, do it before you feel it — delivered by its angriest and least likely exponent. Roy Tony hates the hugging, "puked" after his first four, and does it anyway because "we done motherfucking surrendered our wills in here": the surrender is not serene acceptance but grim obedience to a directive he finds repellent, which is exactly the point — you Fake It Till You Make It whether or not you're a hugger. And the scene stages the theme's recurring lesson physically: Erdedy's ironic, qualifying, distance-making resistance is seized bodily and forced into a "single-entendre" embrace, the cliché ("Hugs Not Drugs") working by terror where argument couldn't, until the ironist is "trying to climb him."
