Catalogs the costume headwear worn at the E.T.A. gala dinner — Viking helmet, fez, Stetson, bowler, bearskin shako, and on and on, "a whole topography of hats" (p. 1029) — including Mary Esther Thode's flat piece of cardboard "propped on her head that says HAT" (p. 1029) and Avril's Fukoama microfiltration mask.
