The mammoth annual E.T.A.-P.W.T.A. meet — Port Washington being "the Xerox Inc. of North American tennis academies, with over 300" students — runs "best out of 108," nine years running; the losing academy must "get up on tables at the buffet supper afterward and sing a really silly song," with a further unspecified "even more embarrassing transaction" between the two Headmasters in private; last year E.T.A. lost 57-51 "and Charles Tavis didn't say one word on the bus-ride home." This year the meet is won decisively now that Wayne and an "exploded" Hal are on the squad ("John Wayne and Hal Incandenza lost only five total games between them in singles," 067). Two weeks on, the End-of-Fiscal-Year fundraising exhibition and Alumni Ball, at which E.T.A.'s A/B squads vivisect a visiting Québec provincial junior team (Jr. Davis/Wightman Cup) "for the philanthropic amusement of E.T.A. patrons and alums" — the Québec team "invited down [...] via the good expatriate offices of Avril Incandenza." That hosted-Québec-team gala is precisely the vector the A.F.R. plans to hijack (the mirror-ambush of the junior squad's bus).
