What: Schacht blew out his right knee on a contre-pied in a pre-Thanksgiving exhibition — the same knee the Crohn's-bred arthritic gout had settled into, causing him terrible on-court pain. Since then the knee is braced, whirlpooled (the "first of several whirlpools for the day" is a morning fixture), injected once at Schtitt's order after Port Washington (067), and swells "to about the size of a volleyball" after days on hard cement; deLint and Loach are always on him about not getting musclebound from his compensatory weight-room habit. Coming after the Crohn's, the injury is the narration's hinge for everything he becomes: "the knee injury broke and remade him at sixteen."
