• What: With Gately shot, Johnette absorbs the House. Calvin Thrust's bedside inventory: "Johnette Foltz is so far covering Gately's shifts and said to say he's in her prayers." She does the discipline — "Johnette had to write up Minty and Diehl" for the gag-arrow they put over the catatonic lady's paralyzed head and left her slumped by the TP like that all day; the discernment — with the new kid Tingley coming out of the linen closet and taking solid food, "Johnette's quit lobbying to have the kid sent over to Met State"; and the noticing — the spiritually broken-and-melted Tiny Ewell "was observed by Johnette taking out the kitchen trash in secret even though his Chore this week was Office Windows" — the House's small spiritual data flowing through her. She hand-feeds the limbo-locked newest resident: Joelle describes "the way Johnette Foltz has to cut up this Dave guy's supper and drop it into his open mouth bit by bit like a bird with a chick." And she gives up her own meetings: the residents go to St. Columbkill's unsupervised "because Johnette F. had to stay and keep an eye on Glynn who was sick and on Henderson and Willis, who were under legal quarantine upstairs." The one dissent is culinary — Day, eating a hospital brownie: "Day says Johnette F. is certainly no Don Gately in the culinary arena. She seems to enjoy some sort of collusive kickback-type relationship with the manufacturers of Spam, Day says, is his theory." Mocked and indispensable in the same breath.
