Hal's "Separatism and Return" class and its uncanny queasiness

• What: Hal's "only really challenging prorected class" is Thierry Poutrincourt's Québecois-history course (taught in Québecois French, which Hal manages via his "youthful tour through Orin's real-French Pléiade Classics"). Having long deflected Avril's suggestions to take it, he now finds Canadian/O.N.A.N. politics "less and less dull." The contemporary anti-O.N.A.N. Separatism material uniquely unsettles him — "a soggier, more furtively nauseous kind of sense, as if someone had been reading mail of Hal's that he thought he'd thrown away." An eerie, unexplained Hal beat (the family's deeper Québec entanglement pressing on him).
