What: Hal has "this horrible new recurring dream where he was losing his teeth" — teeth turned to shale, splintering and melting into grit as he chews, an "oral rot" the dream's Teddy Schacht won't examine while everyone checks their watches and makes excuses, "a general atmosphere of the splintering teeth being a symptom of something way more dire and distasteful that no one wanted to confront him about." He was "pricing dentures when he woke." The clearest interior instance of the dental-decay/dread motif that shadows Hal's whole arc — decay as symptom of a hidden, unconfrontable ruin.
