• What: As Staffer, Gately brings the brand-new veiled resident Joelle van Dyne to White Flag under his "direct new-resident supervision" — the first veiled (U.H.I.D.) resident he's had "under him." He talks with her and Ken Erdedy at the raffle-break. Joelle unsettles him: she attacks "Here But For the Grace of God" as a senseless indicative transposition of a counterfactual subjunctive; Gately has "absolutely nothing in his huge square head to Identify with her with," feels an old panic, and momentarily "sees" the yellow smily-face on her veil. First seed of the later Gately-Joelle arc; her voice is faraway-familiar though he's sure they've never met.
