• What: The A.F.R. platoon commandeers the shop behind an oilskin window-shade and CLOSED/ROPAS/RELACHE signs, rolls the brothers in construction plastic into a storage room "for hygienic purposes," and samples every cartridge via a volunteer viewing rotation on a purchased consumer TP (the shop's own viewer being dysfunctional). Fortier — himself the son of a Glen Almond glass-blower — forbids breaking the shop's mirrors. Two smile-embossed street displays prove blank F.L.Q. hoaxes; then a third, itself "emblazed with the embossed smile and letters disclaiming need of happy pursuit" — the real samizdat wearing the hoax displays' own livery — turns up in the damp dregs of a waste bag: the copy "burglared from the death of DuPlessis," verified at the cost of volunteers Joubet and Desjardins, who view it to death. But it is only a Read-Only copy, not a duplicable Master (n.303: had a Master been present, the brothers would have noticed its unique larger case, set it aside, and been lost themselves). Fortier resolves the A.F.R. must now hunt the auteur's original Master.
