IJ Book Club Ep. 17: Reinventing Government and History — the ONANtiad session (pp. ~375–407 + n.145): Luria authored experialism, found drama as critic-troll, the wraith skeptic holds
TL;DR
The ONANtiad session (Mario's puppet film, the Gentle cabinet material, the Lyle sauna history, the Stice bed-moving, and endnote 145's found-drama interview). The find: Kevin's parse of Tyne's broken-off allow-me-to-illustrate line (p. 403, ASR-derived) — the Concavity plan is LURIA's idea, fed through Tyne's fly to a president who can't articulate it because it was never his — with the puzzle stated plainly (why would the Canadian side want Canada to take the Concavity?) and the Luria-may-be-Avril rumor sitting beside the she-couldn't-have-helped-the-script-it's-too-anti-Canadian objection from earlier in the hour. Around it: found drama read as JOI's critic-troll (the joke being that no camera exists at all; the unfigure-out-able as automatic brilliance), the C-minus marriage grade read as proof JOI loved Avril (real investment is what real disappointment requires), the wraith-skeptic's dated dissent on the Stice furniture (an easy-out discomfort, with the panel's own dark-matter analogy for placeholder explanations), and a footnote-numbering discrepancy between digital and print editions caught live. ASR transcript: paraphrase only.
Key claims
- Coverage: from the AA-meeting residue (p. 375 named on tape, ASR-derived) through the Marathe/Steeply 30-April snippet, the Lyle sauna material, endnote 145 (the Moment interview transcript), and the ONANtiad stretch with its headers, ending at the missiles and the Clipperton tee-up (p. 403 named; endnote 150-vs-159/160 numbering worked live).
- The but-for-the-grace exchange carried from last session: the counterfactual-grammar observation (Gately/Joelle) still unsettled; the panel's general rule restated — declarative sentences in this book are matched by equally declarative opposites two pages later (the Macomber-class it-says-right-here move is worthless here).
- The AA-scene length defended as mimetic (a meeting is long and ends when it ends); the Wallace-broke-AA-anonymity reception item relayed (the Gately model lightly changed from a real Boston figure — as-heard host lore, name approximate).
- The Marathe/Steeply interlude function question: speed-bump / narrative-vamping-for-scene-change theory (the puppet-show vamping observation applied to the book's own pacing); Marathe-unsure-what-Steeply-wants noted from the Marathe POV paragraph.
- Lyle material: the sauna night with JOI as the origin of Confluential Films and anti-confluentialism (only Mario and Joelle know — the line savored); the odd-couple libations (caffeine-free Diet Coke and Wild Turkey); Lyle's legitimacy puzzle (why the saunas stay full — the listening, per the text); the Lamont Chu fame exchange worked as proto-This-Is-Water (print's "they do not feel what you burn for", p. 389; suffering's point crying out); the Lyle-ended-up-being-the-key recall; and the live question of whether Lyle knows what the wraith is doing — whether Lyle is fucking with Stice a little (see the wraith block).
- The C-minus marriage grade cluster: JOI as a
personality-change drinker opening injudiciously to everyone but
Hal and Avril; the grade read as evidence of love (an arranged
marriage grades fine; only investment produces a C-minus); the
expectations frame (which expectation failed? the panel's dry
answer involves Canadians); Avril never once loving toward James
in the whole book — not cruel, just treating him like a figurant —
with the rehab trip as the only interaction anyone can recall;
and the knife-finger in the Volvo window steam recalled as the
one moment JOI's feeling shows (on the way to filming the final
work — the panel infers it fed the film). A
volvo-window-nameadjacency the archive's audited handling already holds. - Endnote 145 (the found-drama interview) worked at length: Orin's earring-flirtation read three ways (deflection from the himself-questions; genuine attraction; all he knows); the interview dated to the same day as the first separatism call (Kevin's timeline stitch across the calls); Steeply's intimidation confession noted; the found-drama mechanics themselves (the phone-book dart; no cartridge, no audience, nothing recorded — the joke being the total absence of cameras); Kevin's almost-nobody parse (the unrecorded question was who watches these); and the lead's film-industry riff on the don't-show-the-branding principle (the audience fills in better than you can shoot) as the found-drama logic generalized.
- The ONANtiad apparatus: Tim's listener trivia question (why is Mario's version 76 minutes against himself's four-plus hours?) worked without resolution — the headers-as-compression theory (himself showed what Mario title-cards) the best candidate; the headers as silent-movie cards / period newspaper text; the puppet-show-as-the-next-civilization's-ancient-history reading (if the Entertainment ends the world, this broom-closet film is what survives as history); Gentle as David Hasselhoff not Donald Trump (the panel's explicit anti-Trump-parallel position, dated 2023); the Blue-Velvet oxygen-gasp reading of Gentle's ha-ha lines; Tyne-runs-implementation; the image-consciousness observation (Viney & Veals in the room — planning the presentation simultaneously with the plan).
- Marlon Bain material: Avril's first student liaison (footnote recall, location not pinned on-air); the Orin-fucked-Bain's-sister retaliation reading (the panel's logic: you don't touch a buddy's mother or sister, and both happened); the Brando/Bain name proximity re-noticed (ep07's theory rides along); Bain's damaged present via the Steeply letter recalled.
- Anton Doucette texture: the booger-man anxiety spiral plus endnote 147's confirmation the upperclassmen DO call him that (paranoia validated); the panel notices the Doucette/du-set name proximity to Joelle's father's name as-heard (uncertain, flagged).
- Hal texture: nicotine-and-sugar compulsions (oral-fixation
reading); Hal watching his father's films read through the
lead's own father-of-a-teenager testimony — the
metamorphosis estrangement (three hours on Bugs Bunny at six;
silence at fifteen) as what himself misses: Hal watching JOI's
MOVIES is Hal being present in the boat, unseen (a
hal-estrangementreception row). - Edition-variance datum: the annular-fusion footnote is 150 in the digital edition and 159/160 in print — caught live while cross-referencing (pairs with the archive's other e-edition variance data).
- Color: Blue Angels opening; Cat's Cradle read that week — ice-nine as the lethal-unstoppable-substance rhyme with the Entertainment; the circle-of-reactions (n.150) tied to the White-Flaggers-drive-to-Conway circulation image.
Theories & evidence
THEORY: Experialism is Luria's idea — the Concavity plan originates on the Canadian side and reaches Gentle through Tyne's fly
- Crux:
avril-afr(withgentle-electorateadjacency) - Stance: advances
- Evidence:
[text]Kevin's parse (p. 403, ASR-derived): Tyne's allow-me-to-illustrate-what-were— breaks off — read as Tyne repeating Luria's words; the plan is hers, not his, and not Gentle's. [01:38–01:40][inference]The transmission chain assembled: Luria (having affected Tyne's heart through his fly, per the script's own innuendo) → Tyne (Unspecified Services) → a president who cannot articulate the policy because it was never his idea — which retro-explains Gentle's gasping incoherence in the very scenes the panel just read. [01:39–01:41][inference]The puzzle stated rather than solved: why would the Canadian side WANT Canada to take the Concavity? — answered provisionally with the anti-Canada-to-anti-ONAN flexibility the Hal/Orin calls established (alliances are instruments; the enemy is fungible). [01:38–01:39][inference]The Avril triangulation: the Luria-may-be-Avril rumor is set against the earlier objection that Avril couldn't have helped Mario's anti-Canadian script — the flexibility answer dissolves the objection, and the panel flags the script's own Luria innuendo as written by Mario and/or whoever helped him. [01:31–01:33, 01:39–01:41]
- Notes: The broken-off-line parse is a genuinely sharp close-read with big-ledger implications if it verifies (print check the n.145/ONANtiad script line): it would make the book's founding geopolitical act AFR-authored, which the archive's Luria/Avril material would need to hold alongside the who-benefits question. The panel's own uncertainty is preserved throughout.
THEORY: Found drama is the critic-troll — the unfigure-out-able is automatically brilliant, and camera-free reality is the joke
- Crux:
incandenza-autobiography(withbook-as-entertainmentadjacency) - Stance: advances
- Evidence:
[inference]The code-crack reading: critics fund and fete what they cannot figure out, because the alternative is admitting incomprehension — himself, per the panel, saw this and manufactured maximal unfigure-out-ability (a name makes a nothing a something: found drama). [00:33–00:36][text]The mechanics from n.145: the phone-book page, the dart, the ninety unobserved minutes, drinks with chortling critics after — no cartridge, no audience, nothing recorded; in print's words, "Reality being camera-free, being the joke I’ll again underline." (n. 145); and the grant-money-clawback recall riding along. [00:36–00:38][inference]Kevin's almost-nobody parse: the unrecorded interviewer question must have been who SEES these — Orin's almost-nobody conceding the entire point. [00:39–00:40][inference]The generalization via the lead's film-work testimony: the don't-show-the-branding principle — the audience's filled-in version beats the shot version — as the perceptual truth found drama weaponizes into pure con. [00:37–00:39]
- Notes: The archive's filmography material holds found drama mostly as anti-confluential taxonomy; the critic-troll framing with the name-makes-it-real observation is the sharpest civilian statement of its function, and the Duquette/Brandeis-critic-killed recall ties the troll to its eventual victims.
THEORY: The Stice furniture stays unexplained on purpose — and the wraith reading is the book's dark matter
- Crux:
wraith-reality(withlyle-wraithadjacency) - Stance: advances (with preserved dissent)
- Evidence:
[text]The triad as the text gives it: somnambulism, sleep-telekinesis, or a hostile telekinetic other — with Stice's own preference (if anybody's doing this, it's me) and the if-I-can-do-this-what-else corollary the panel extends to the missing DMZ and the woods camera (an alternative-agent reading for both). [01:12–01:14, 01:18–01:20][inference]The dark-matter analogy: in-book explanations like the wraith function the way placeholder names function in science — a term that solves the math without being seen, smelled, or detected; naming it is not explaining it. [01:14–01:16][inference]Kevin's dated dissent, restated: the wraith reads like an easy out — a near-deus-ex-machina he was surprised to find Wallace writing; Gately is feverish and lucky to be alive, so of course he sees a wraith — held as the position he'll re-test on this read. [01:17–01:19][inference]The Lyle-complicity question left open: if it IS the wraith, does Lyle know? is Lyle having a bit of sport at Stice's expense? — connecting the sauna's all-knowing listener to the disturbances without asserting mechanism. [01:19–01:20]
- Notes: Kevin here is recognizably the ep36 wraith-holdout
eight months early — the archive's live-dissent thread gains its
origin point. The alternative-agent extension (Stice as the
DMZ-remover) is a genuinely distinct lane the
hal-dmztriad material doesn't currently hold.
THEORY: The C-minus grade proves love — and the Volvo knife-finger is JOI's one visible wound
- Crux:
volvo-window-name(withjoi-suicide-motivecontext) - Stance: advances
- Evidence:
[inference]The grade argument: an arrangement grades itself fine; a C-minus is what a man gives a marriage he expected something from — the disappointment measures the investment; said drunk to Lyle with Mario drifting awake (the injudicious-openness texture). [00:19–00:22][text]The asymmetry inventory: Avril never once loving toward James anywhere the panel can recall — not cruel, just figurant-handling — with the rehab escort as the sole interaction; James, by contrast, emotionally invested. [00:23–00:26][text]The Volvo tell: the name in the window steam on the way to the final shoot — the one moment the text lets JOI's feeling show, inferred to feed the final work. [00:24–00:25]
- Notes: Consistent with the archive's audited as-printed handling of the window-name material; the love-measured-by-disappointment frame is a compact motive-context row for the JOI cluster. The Bain material (Avril's first student liaison; Orin's sister-retaliation reading) rides this session as the marriage's other ledger entries.
Themes
Authorship and its concealments (Luria through Tyne through Gentle; found drama's authorless drama; who helped Mario); explanation as placeholder (dark matter, the wraith); love graded (the C-minus, the window); history as puppet show (the ONANtiad's headers, the next civilization's record); fathers watching sons watching fathers (the films, the estrangement testimony).
