TL;DR

A 17-image collection of the genuinely interpretive visual work on Infinite Jest — structure visualizations, chronology charts, geographic maps, an Eschaton infographic, and two competing post-ending reconstructions. Headline finding: the strongest material (Swinehart's Infinite Digest, 2021-26) independently lands on the same YDAU=2009 calendar the archive uses; and the two post-ending reconstructions, drawn independently, converge on the same Wayne ending — recruited for the dig, then killed by the A.F.R. Later extended with the Jane Topping blog cluster (a Glasgow artist's DFW curation posts — the source of two new keepers, incl. the only known E.T.A. campus map, credited to Kyle Ware) and eyeball cross-checks of both new images against the novel.

Key claims

  • Christian Swinehart's Infinite Digest (samizdat.co/digest/, the novel's 30th-anniversary visualization project, the most rigorous fan dataset found) maps Subsidized Time to YW=2002... YDAU=2009, YG=2010 in its published CSVs — identical to the archive's table. It segments the book into 201 episode units vs the archive's 185 scenes: a coarser/different splitting, not a substantive disagreement. Three keepers: the "Plotlines" poster draft (all episodes chronologically with arcs tracking the four character groups), the "Radically Condensed History" poster (per-character lifelines; labels Year of Glad "the very last year of O.N.A.N.ite Subsidized Time"), and the page-order-vs-chronology scatter — the cleanest single image of how the narrative shuffles story time, with the YG frame visibly last and isolated.
  • Jake Bittle's Plot Symmetry Diagram (c. 2013, from the Fiction Advocate liveblog orbit) is the best ending-theory diagram located: a lens-shaped curve symmetric about the JOI-wraith axis, with pre-ending events mirrored by projected post-ending events. It commits to specific camp positions: Hal eats DMZ (11/20 YDAU), the AFR murders John Wayne "for his betrayal," the head-digging happens, Orin's mailing of the samizdat is the "Too Late!" vector. Its dates (4/1 YDAU attaché; 11/20 YDAU endgame) agree with the archive's chronology.
  • The "Right of Frame" storyboards (infinite-jest-storyboards.com, c. 2022) are the other post-ending reconstruction, in annotated photo-storyboard form. They agree with Bittle on John Wayne end to end: Wayne is "recruited by Hal after Joelle tells of the plan of AFR" (panel 1), joins the dig, and is then "killed by AFR" as a "double (even numbered) agent" (panel 2). They also misdate Wayne's broadcast incident as "6 November YDAU" — the archive's ruling is 17 Nov YDAU (n.324 dateline + n.332, corroborated by scene 160's Tuesday dateline). The two independent endings converging on recruited-then-killed is itself the collection's cleanest Wayne datum.
  • Geography is well served: the Boston Globe's Sept 2008 annotated Boston map (journalistic, published with the obituary coverage, pre-dating the fan projects) and William Beutler's 2012 Infinite Map poster (territorially reconfigured North America, his own ruled outline of the Great Concavity, O.N.A.N. Great Seal per p. 153). Both agree with the Infinite Atlas notes already in the archive — unsurprisingly for Beutler, who made both.
  • Chris Ayers / Poor Yorick Entertainment (2011; discussed in Great Concavity ep. 7) contributes the most text-faithful single-scene piece: the Eschaton infographic ("November 8, Year of the Depend Adult Undergarment" — matching the archive's I-Day ruling), with combatant map, player roster, Lord's beanie semantics, and the mean-value megatonnage formula. Also kept: his Subsidized Time grid (year order matches the archive's exactly) and one representative JOI filmography poster (Medusa v. Odalisque, credits faithful to n.24).
  • Negative finding worth recording: despite the Bookworm interview making the Sierpinski gasket the most-cited structural claim about the novel, no one has actually produced a diagram mapping IJ's content onto the gasket — only generic fractal figures next to prose. (an online forum explicitly requested one in 2014; nobody delivered.) An Ennet House floor plan likewise remains unmade. The E.T.A. campus fares slightly better: the one credible map located is Kyle Ware's axonometric cardioid, surfaced via the Topping cluster (see below) — otherwise that gap stood too. Character-network graphs from computational-lit projects also failed to materialize; Swinehart's "Social Networks" section is announced for Fall 2026 and would be the first serious one.

The Jane Topping blog cluster

Topping is a Glasgow-based artist whose film work draws on DFW; her blog's DFW posts are curation, not analysis — short link-posts with images and creator captions. That's exactly their value: credit recovery. Two of the archive's keepers exist because of her captions, and one caption enriches a third keeper's provenance.

  • "2 further bits on dfw and IJ – and some maps" (2016-03-04) — the substantive one. Opens with the two Guardian links (Leith's "IJ at 20" explainer and D.T. Max's "secular saint" piece — spawned leads, digested in guardian-ij-pieces), then six visuals with captions: (1) Jake Bittle's Plot Symmetry diagram, in the 1188x898 render that upgraded our general online discussion.jpg in place; (2) the Boston Globe "Boston's infinite jest / A David Foster Wallace memorial tour" map — her caption supplies creator credits otherwise lost: text by Danielle Dreilinger, illustrated map by Javier Zarracina; (3) "ETA grounds by Kyle Ware" — the only known creator credit for the campus map, kept as `[local source] (tumblr-pattern filename, original source lost); (4) an Eschaton image she credits "Unknown author" (not among our keepers; our Eschaton keeper is the credited Ayers infographic); (5) Sam Potts's character map (archived separately, see sam-potts-character-map); (6) a Joon Mo Kang NYT illustration (Feb 2016, not kept). The standout here is credit recovery: the Ware map is the payoff.
  • "brickjest.com" (2016-02-27) — two-line announcement of Brick Jest, "illustrated with Lego by Sebastian Griffith and his son," with one photo: the p. 322 Eschaton epigraph staging, kept as `[local source] Credit discrepancy: Topping makes Sebastian the father; Leith's Guardian explainer (item 15, citing the Guardian's own 2014 booksblog coverage) makes Sebastian the 11-year-old son, building with "his English professor father." The Leith/booksblog version (son builds, father assists) is the better-sourced credit and the one used here. brickjest.com itself is still live. Verdict: pointer-post; the kept exemplar photo is the value.
  • "The rise and fall of the videophone" (2015-12-07) — one line + one stock-ish photo ("A videophone, yesteryear," not kept), linking IJ's videophony section (pp. 144-151, scene 047) via declineofscarcity.com/?page_id=2527 (page unarchived). Biographical crumb: DFW is "currently the driver of the film I'm working on." Verdict: a lead-generator, nothing to digest beyond the link.
  • Pointer-only siblings (link-posts only, nothing further here): janetopping-dfw-guardian-my-hero.txt (2014-07-12) just points at Colin Barrett's "My Hero: DFW" column (digested in guardian-ij-pieces); janetopping-nigel-kneale-sex-olympics.txt (2018-09-08, marginal) links Nigel Kneale's Year of the Sex Olympics to Subsidized Time via wallacewiki.

THEORY: Hal deliberately eats the DMZ (c. 20 Nov YDAU)
