Context
The MIRV bus is a jockstrap. To scatter multiple warheads a Combatant knots dead tennis balls into "an intricately knotted athletic supporter designed to open out in midflight" — the most abject piece of locker-room kit conscripted as intercontinental ordnance. The joke is pure the-body-tennis: every escalation of the game just reaches deeper into the gear bag, and the sport's most intimate equipment becomes the instrument of maximum destruction.
