Context
Hal lays bare the ranking structure as the academy's foundational logic: challenge matches mean the players spend hours "trying to take away each other's spots on the squads," so "the system's got inequality as an axiom" and everyone knows his exact ladder-position at all times. The rankings aren't a scoreboard laid over the sport; they are the sport's social physics — "we're all on each other's food chain" — the body's worth defined continuously and comparatively against every other body in the building.
