Marathe & Steeply / betrayal — "Marathe hunched slightly in his metal…"

Both men on the outcropping are trained instruments, and the scene opens on their bodies held in professional attitudes: Steeply "going up and down slowly on the toes of his high heels," bare arms crossed, working the female disguise even at rest; Marathe folded into a "practiced position" that lets him half-sleep while missing nothing — surveillance rendered as bodily discipline, the watcher's craft worn all the way into posture. And over the whole exchange hangs the operational blank at its center: "Marathe remained unsure […] what exactly it was that Hugh Steeply of U.S.O.U.S. wished to learn from him, or verify, through Marathe’s betrayal." Even the man committing the betrayal cannot name its object. The espionage here is pure form — two fabricated bodies performing tradecraft at each other across a datum whose purpose neither the reader nor the traitor can fix.
