Marathe & Steeply, the father and M*A*S*H — "This unless this was part of…"

And so Marathe cannot take even this at face value. Steeply's demeanor has gone "more young," self-enmeshed, seemingly "uncalculated" as he relives the family's slow catastrophe — and that very unguardedness is what Marathe must weigh as possibly "part of some performance beyond Marathe." It's the trap the whole relationship has built: where sincerity is structurally undecidable (031's laugh, 035's "real or tactical"), apparent vulnerability becomes the one move that cannot be verified, and therefore the most sophisticated cover available. The more genuinely broken Steeply seems, the more Marathe has to suspect the seeming — candor weaponized past the point where anyone, including the reader, can call it.
