The whole apparatus of the reconfigured map rendered as an operational route: the A.F.R. van "bypassed the Pongo checkpoint at Methuen MA," drives where "the snowfall was worse in the Convexity because of the fans to the south," through "what used to be Montpelier in Vermont" — "between E.W.D. grids," fallout-poisoned from Champlain, "unoccupied and ghostly white with snow." The erased map of 114 (the "what used to be" formula) is here a landscape the insurgents actually cross: the ATHSCME fans thickening the snow, the fallout-emptied towns, the checkpoints. The border the Reconfiguration drew is the terrain of the war it caused, driven through in a modified van toward an ambush.
