The A.F.R.'s war aim distinguished from the ordinary Separatist one: not "the Concavity redemised," not "secession for Québec" — those are the F.L.Q.'s bargainable, "Bolivian" goals — but Fortier wanting the U.S. simply dead. Marathe's retort, "You cannot kill what is already dead," pushes the dispute past territory into metaphysics: the fight is no longer over a border but over a nation's already-accomplished spiritual death. The Concavity becomes the occasion, not the object.
