Context
The detail's official purpose is literal cartography: Chu — carrying a clipboard with a pen twined to its clamp, later writing by a penlight held in his teeth — is charting the under-campus, logging the coordinates of the unmovable so bigger bodies can act on his map later. The one Eschatonite the anhedonia essay will except from carrot-worship (p. 693) is here the expedition's designated mapmaker, converting the school's buried clutter into a legend for adults who'll never grope down the tunnels themselves.
