Carlisle's reading, recorded not adopted: he re-applies the section's kill-line verbatim to James Incandenza himself — less than two years after this scene, Mario's father "like Clipperton" eradicates his map and then some, leaving "an ungodly subsequent mess," counselor and counseled dying in the same diction with Mario adjacent both times (the "first of his life's two funerals so far" quietly counting the second). The word-for-word transfer makes the Clipperton Suite session a rehearsal, in the idiom's own terms, for the microwave.
