which Michael Pemulis was doing absently as he waited and scanned a printout of Eschaton’s highly technical core ESCHAX directory, i.e. bobbing in his chair, which produced a kind of rapid rodential squeaking that gave Hal Incandenza the howling fantods as he sat there kitty-corner from Pemulis, also waiting. The printout kept rotating in Pemulis’s hands.
Context
Two days after the debacle, the four summoned Eschaton principals in Tavis's blue waiting room, and Pemulis kills the time cramming the game's source: the ESCHAX directory, Eschaton boiled all the way down to code on paper. The game that died when its map got confused with the territory survives as a pure map-artifact, rotating in its author's hands while he preps his legal defense of it.
