the weight room: Freer at the mirror
‘Way to fucking take it baby,’ Freer says, going over to the box on the dispenser to get rosin for his hands, watching himself walk toward the mirror.
Context
Freer's spotting-patter is the third register in the room — machismo as pure performance, screamed encouragement ("It raped your sister! It killed your fucking mother man!") pitched at nobody's actual feelings and everybody's audience-self. He can't cross the floor without watching himself do it in the mirror; the exertion is real but the delivery is theater staged for his own reflection. Between Lyle's plain wisdom and Pemulis's ironic mimicry, Freer marks the third pole — where feeling and display fuse into un-self-aware spectacle, sincerity that has never once considered not being watched.
