the AA thesis: fake it till you make it
You’re encouraged to keep saying stuff like this until you start to believe it
Context
The banality-that-works mechanism, stated as method. The Program doesn't ask you to mean the clichés first — it prescribes "empty lip-service to slogans they don't yet understand or believe," 'Easy Does It!' and 'One Day At a Time!', under the slogan-for-slogans "Fake It Till You Make It." Sincerity arrives after the cliché, through repetition, not before it as a precondition — you say the trite thing until it becomes true in your mouth. This is the theme's engine turned all the way around from irony's assumption that saying-what-you-don't-mean is a lie: here saying-what-you-don't-yet-mean is the practice by which you come to mean it. Belief as a downstream effect of banal speech, not its source.
