Context
Hal's answer, and the family's whole epistemology of ghosts in one breath: Himself saw his own father's ghost on stairways, and the family filed it with the DTs' spiders and the delusion that Hal wasn't speaking — except that last delusion becomes the book's most horribly confirmed perception, which quietly re-opens the ghost file too. Dead father seeing dead father, told by the son who's haunted next.
