The children along the bottom tier were leaning left and then right in tandem, amusing themselves. The apparition with the lens and metal pole was gone, overhead.
Context
Third set: Mario — who filmed the first set from the transom with his head-mount lens and police lock protruding — has packed up, and the narration notes his absence by calling him "The apparition with the lens and metal pole." The boy the bleachers perceived all match as an apparition-shaped overhead presence (the crow's-nest shadow of p. 654) finally gets the word itself.
