Context

Locker-room furniture doing quiet thematic work: Hal sees the loogie's flight only as the plate mirrors catch it — the scene's literal mirror, Hal watching the room by reflection minutes before the quiz renames him as a lens-distortion. ("clear his throat" as written, where grammar wants "clears.")
