Context
Marathe notices the tell that makes this Steeply's one unperformed self. The man is a professional impersonator, currently telling all this in drag and running makeup, a demeanor built entirely of calculation — and here, recounting his father, he goes "uncalculated," "self-enmeshed," his whole bearing reverting to "that of some young person." The performer drops the performance only for the father: the story of the man consumed by an entertainment is the one thing Steeply can't hold at professional arm's length, and the reversion to boyhood is visible on his face. The son who spends his life in disguise has exactly one subject that strips the disguise off.
