Poor Tony's seizure (pp. 301–302)
His own late obstetrician father had rended his own clothing in symbolic shiva in the Year of the Whopper in the kitchen of the Krause home, 412 Mount Auburn Street, horrid central Watertown.
Context
Dropped without warning into the middle of the Withdrawal catalog, in the same flat register as the ants and the incontinence: the father performed mourning for a son who is still, wretchedly, alive. Shiva torn in the family kitchen for a boy who hadn't died — had only become, to an obstetrician, the wrong kind of body — which makes the grief a disowning dressed as bereavement. Poor Tony carries the fact the way he carries the address, precise and unhosted; the father who delivers babies for a living tore his shirt over this one and buried him without the courtesy of a death.
