Steeply accosts Joelle (p. 934)

The face inside the deadliest object in the world is told she's in mind-boggling danger, and she can't be bothered to be impressed. Steeply (in drag) warns Joelle that as the samizdat's performer she's a target; Joelle takes "rather a while" to look the huge woman up and down and answers that this is hardly news. The exchange compresses the star's whole relation to the Entertainment: the danger of being the lethal film's face is, to her, indistinguishable from the ambient danger she's lived under her entire life — the danger of her own ruined beauty, the veil, being looked at. To everyone else she is a fatal spectacle to be hunted for; to herself she is just a woman who has always been in danger from how she's seen, and one more mind-boggling threat barely registers. The Entertainment's terror, met with a shrug by the one person it most implicates.
