Carlisle's reading of the glass-basement dream's strangest detail: the glass that doesn't break but permits and heals is AA's protective membrane around the addict — "tenuous and… only effective while the addict chooses to surrender" — and Dream Duty (defined a page later) is that membrane literalized as a staffing rotation: a person awake all night at the boundary, catching what tries to melt through.
