Gately, who’d pulled an all-night Dream Duty shift out in the front office till 0400, then got temp-relieved by Johnette Foltz so he could go to work janitoring down at the Shattuck Shelter till 0700
Context
The term "Dream Duty" enters the book here — as the shift Gately has just come off, which is why he's supine on the Staff couch for the whole scene. On its own this would be a staffing detail (the 158-precedent exclusion), but this is the scene that goes on to write dream-policy's charter at pp. 279-280, and this line is what stations the charter's author in the room, up all night with other people's dreams.
