Context
Pemulis's anti-AA gospel, and it's not stupid: if you genuinely need the thing, hoisting the white flag and going without it doesn't heal you, it hollows you — the Allston guys who quit cold and became machines with the keys visible in their backs, up and working and eating and sleeping with something gone from behind the eyes, the walking dead who loved it so much they needed it and now just wait to die. The book will spend its whole Ennet House arc rebutting this, but the rebuttal never reaches this room, and the horror Pemulis describes is real; his phrase for cold-quitting is "hoist the white flag," which is the exact name of Gately's AA group — the counter-doctrine and the doctrine passing each other in the dark.
