The word Hal couldn't say in the closed room broadcast over WETA into every room of the Academy: Wayne's dosed, disinhibited rant naming Hal's doubles partner "by all appearances addicted to everything that is not tied down." The private, unsayable noun of n.321 — the identification Hal flinched from and Pemulis withheld — arrives as public castigation, delivered by accident through a mouth full of Pemulis's own pilfered stimulant, landing two days into Hal's white-knuckle abstinence. The thing he couldn't admit to his closest friend is now the Academy's common knowledge, said by the one person even less able to feel his way toward candor than Hal is.
