It’s not like Boston AA recoils from the idea of responsibility, though. Cause: no; responsibility: yes. It seems like it all depends on which way the arrow of presumed responsibility points.
Context
The doctrinal hinge that resolves the previous speaker's failure and the theme's whole ethics of the Disease. AA's ban on Cause is not a ban on responsibility — the two are opposites pointing in opposite directions. Cause points outward (something was done to me, therefore Excuse); responsibility points inward (I did this, and I answer for it, whatever made me). The distinction is what lets the program hold addicts blameless for having the Disease and fully accountable for treating it, and it is the exact line the meeting's two final speakers are staged to draw — the stripper's outward arrow curdles the room, the infant-mother's inward arrow silences it.
