All Marathe/Steeply mountainside dialogues and most of the AFR material are post-1993 additions; the germ, however, dates to 1986.

This is material that was added after the early draft: absent from the 1993 manuscript, present in the published novel.

Expanded through 1994 as Wallace's answer to Pietsch's 1993 objection to the "ornately bizarre-to-goofy superstructure" of the Quebecois plot ("the dog is awfully shaggy already") — he grew the "interAmerican huggermugger" instead of trimming it, believing the book needed it for his "seat at the table with Pynchon."
