Endnote 111 — "whinge"

"whinge" (p. 1022) is a Hal-ism, really an Incandenza-family word brought in by Avril, an expatriate Québecer; it is an east-Canadian idiom for "vigorous high-pitched complaining" (p. 1022), like whining but carrying a hint that the complaint is legitimate.
