The ajar door: Troeltsch in Axhandle's single

• What: Axford had drawn one of only two single upperclass rooms in last spring's lottery (057). In the 20-Nov blizzard, Hal finds Stice at the frozen window and then Troeltsch emerging from Axhandle's doorway, having spent the night in the single with its one bed; a tacit agreement forms not even to bring up Troeltsch's being in Axford's room or where Axford was. Later that morning Hal registers he'd heard nothing about Troeltsch apparently switching room-assignments with Trevor Axford, and is unsettled that something so major could happen without his hearing of it. Whether a formal switch occurred or Axford was simply absent all night is left deliberately open — Axford himself never appears on-page in either scene; only his room and his absence do.
