• What: Ewell recurs only as part of the frame of Gately's parade of bedside confessors: Geoffrey Day's visit is measured against his ("As with Ewell, when Gately comes up out of sleep there's no way to tell how long Day's been there," scene 162), and Ewell's chair is the same one "the wraith and... Calvin Thrust had all sat in" (scene 169). This is the last the novel shows of him: an ongoing Ennet House resident whose ego has, per Thrust, "broken and melted" but whose recovery is unresolved — no relapse, no graduation, no departure, no death is recorded in-range.
