• What: The academy's academic layer. "Each of the eight to ten prorectors [...] teaches one academic class per term" for certification — and being failed touring pros, "their classes tend to be not only electives but Academy jokes" (deLint's Athletic Spreadsheets, Watson's annulation survey, Thorp's Deviant Geometries, Thode's psycho-political double-binds), which the older E.T.A.s clamor for anyway. Above them sit the real curriculum and its Deans: Avril's required Grammars, the mandatory "Introduction to Entertainment Studies" (Ogilvie) and Leith's History of Entertainment/Optics, the inescapable Flatland, and Mlle. Thierry Poutrincourt's "Separatism and Return: Québecois History" — taught only in Québecois French, the one class Hal finds hard, and the seat of the mirror-across-the-highways lecture.
