Charles Tavis takes the helm after JOI's suicide — the motto swapped, the founder's role assumed

• When: JOI's felo de se is 1 April in the Year of the Trial-Size Dove Bar; Tavis, already Assistant Headmaster, assumes total control from that date; his Convocation of "absorbed resentment" is 31 August YDPAH, "after four years"
• What: The institution's one true turning point. JOI, drinking and travelling and in and out of thirteen rehabs across his final three years, had ceded ever more of E.T.A. to his wife's adoptive/half-brother Charles Tavis — who came down from Throppinghamshire, liaisoned Orin's B.U. deal, cashed his return ticket, and stayed as Assistant Headmaster. When JOI puts his head in a microwave, Tavis moves into the Headmaster's House and office and "chang[es] the door's" founding motto — the grim Schtittless-humanist "TE OCCIDERE POSSUNT SED TE EDERE NON POSSUNT NEFAS EST" (n32) replaced with the upbeat "THE MAN WHO KNOWS HIS LIMITATIONS HAS NONE." Avril could not be Headmaster ("Headmistress"?) and stays Dean of Academic Affairs and of Females; Tavis's public identity becomes Total Worry and studied openness to the resentment of an "interloping usurper." The headmastership he inherits is also a legal-administrative plate already full: "litigations with Enfield Marine Public Health Hospital over alleged damage from E.T.A.'s initial hilltop-flattening and with Empire Waste Displacement" over flight-paths, plus a tax-exempt-status review — the institution's founding earthworks still generating paperwork years on (068).
