• What: Molly Notkin and Joelle van Dyne met in M.I.T.'s Film & Film-Cartridge Theory doctoral program (Notkin the upperclassman, event 4; Joelle the younger student who later withdrew into radio) and became close phone-confidantes, Joelle regarding the two of them as twins of a kind — the veiled/deformed and the disguise-loving, "one upside-down in a convex lens." Notkin is drawn with a fear of direct light and a taste for whiskers and costumes that Joelle reads as "veiled veils," a mirror of Joelle's own literal veil. Crucially, Notkin never learns Joelle's private history — that Joelle has been "in a cage since Y.T.S.D.B.," what she and Jim were about, or that Joelle is at this very party preparing to overdose.
