• What: For the first time the A.F.R.'s own operational narration places Luria in the field: reviewing the surveillance of "The deceased auteur's colleagues and relations," Fortier's chapter reports that "In the Desert, the redoubtable Mlle. Luria P——was winning necessary confidences with her usual alacrity." Every word is load-bearing: she is the A.F.R.'s asset ("redoubtable," with "her usual alacrity" — this is her standing trade, practiced enough to have a "usual"); her method is "winning necessary confidences"; and her theater is "the Desert" — the Southwest, where Orin is, and where the A.F.R.'s operations base sits. The sentence never says from whom the confidences are being won; but it sits inside the surveillance-roster of the auteur's "colleagues and relations," and the only Desert-resident relation is Orin — the strong implication, carried as implication, that this names the hand-model operation of events 6-8 from the other side. This is also the sentence that settles nothing about Tine while quietly confirming Luria works for — or at least within the operations of — the A.F.R. in the YDAU present, whoever else she may serve.
