• When: standing question across the novel (evidence spans YDAU and the YG grave-watch)
• What: The novel leaves open whether Wayne — Québec emigrant, near-silent, masked at the grave-dig — is a covert operative for the Separatist / A.F.R. cause, and if so which cell is live. RECORDED AS open. Evidence toward it (all inferred, none stated): (a) Montcerf origin near the Mercier Dam and revoked Québecois/Canadian citizenship (event 3); (b) the morose expatriate-Nuck cohort he keeps, and the ironyless "hard facts" homesickness of the Canadian boys (events 5, 9); (c) deLint's insistence on keeping the U.S. agent Steeply "off him" precisely because of his "geopolitics, privation, exile" (event 15); (c2) the A.F.R. cell's own operational report (Fortier POV, scene 147, ~12-14 Nov YDAU): a newly recruited E.T.A. employee "joined the Canadian instructor and student already inside for closer work of surveillance" — the "Canadian instructor and student" are UNNAMED in-text; they are strongly implied to be Poutrincourt and Wayne, an inference, not a statement; (d) the masked grave-watch over JOI's head — the Entertainment Master's presumed resting place, the A.F.R.'s whole quarry (event 21); (e) the Avril liaison, given Avril's own novel-long cloud of suspected Québec/A.F.R. sympathies (events 13-14, 19). Evidence against / complicating it (also as printed): (f) Wayne is "disowned" by Québec — an exile, not obviously an agent (event 3); (g) Schacht's reading that "it's wholly unclear... how Wayne feels about the U.S. or his citizenship-status," that Wayne figures "it doesn't much matter" because he is "destined for the Show... an all-business entertainer, citizen of the world" — i.e. apolitical, loyal only to the Show (event 5); (h) nothing in the novel states, in any narrator's voice, that Wayne is A.F.R. or acts for Québec. This account records the split and resolves NOTHING; the grave-dig-watcher role (event 21) is attested but its allegiance-meaning stays open.
