What: Via Chu and Avril (Mario-POV canvass): Van Vleck saw Pemulis and Hal being led out of Tavis's office earlier by the O.N.A.N.T.A. urine-guy holding them both by the ear, "Hal's face was the color of Kaopectate" — Hal in disciplinary/drug-test jeopardy tied to the Eschaton debacle and the urine problem. Chu can't believe Hal (a mere spectator) would take Eschaton discipline. Meanwhile Hal has left the grounds with Pemulis (their truck taken before Study Period), unreachable; earlier he'd had "a tooth thing" and gone to see Zeggarelli — establishing Hal's chronic dental trouble, inherited from Himself (JOI had horrible teeth, half of them bridges; cf. event 74 and Dating notes). Hal told Mario he wished Mario would come back and sleep in their room.
