• What: Among DuPlessis's effects the night he died: atop the seascape safe's "more negotiable contents," a "top-hole genuine InterLace state-of-the-art TP/viewer ensemble" with "several shelves crammed tight with upscale arty-looking film cartridges," over whose fence-value Gately's colleague just about drooled. The A.F.R.'s later hunt treats the Entertainment itself as having been in that haul — the cartridge they finally recover is flatly called "the samizdat cartridge of Entertainment burglared from the death of DuPlessis" (event 11) — and their real question is pedigree: "could this copy of DuPlessis itself be copied? This was the real objective: a Master cartridge." Where his copies came from is conjecture, attributed and hedged as printed: "There was reason to think M. DuPlessis had received his original copies from this relative, an athlete" — the relative of the auteur whom the A.F.R.'s Southwest operation infiltrates. So the book's chain of custody for the samizdat runs through DuPlessis — athlete-relative (conjectured) to DuPlessis to the burglary haul — with every link upstream of the burglary attested only as what some party thought or had "reason to think." None of it resolved here.
