• What: Day is moved from the 5-Man to the 3-Man early, rooming with Randy Lenz and Doony Glynn — the two "don't quite look at each other." He lies awake to Lenz's coked oral autobiographies and "moist gurgles," at one point threatening to fetch Gately to have Lenz "forcibly stifled"; he is redflagged by Staff as the "Ewell- or Day-type you have to stressfully worry about maybe going and ratting out" on Lenz to the Finest. He and Lenz share the same "Box-surveillance" delusion — "the well-read Geoffrey D." also "knew only too well" the theory that watchers follow you by walking in front of you. Day keeps a "Recovery Journal" of comparative-class ethnography (the male residents' penis-nicknames; quotations from Lenz), and, after Lenz's discharge moves Ewell into the 3-Man, finds to his own surprise that he "would die before admitting he missed either Lenz or his soliloquies about the Hog."
