The wraith visitations — "Himself" (JOI) interfaces through Gately's brain-voice

• When: night(s) in the Trauma Wing; a fever-dream Gately half-knows is a dream
• What: A tall, slumped, black-framed-glasses wraith in too-short "Highwater" chinos — read as the ghost of James O. Incandenza ("Himself") — holds still for "the wraith-equivalent of three weeks" to interface with the mute Gately. It can speak only through Gately's own internal brain-voice (its thoughts feel like his own), moves at the speed of quanta, and cannot affect solid things. It monologues about figurants (mute film-extras) and about its life's dream: a filmed entertainment so compelling it would draw its silent, disappearing youngest son "out of himself," a way to say "I AM SO VERY, VERY SORRY" and be heard; it forces foreign lexical terms into Gately's head (a "lexical rape"). A younger, athletic wraith in biking shorts also appears and licks Gately's forehead. Gately, unimpressed by the self-pity, wonders whether it is a visitation from his Higher Power or the Disease coming to argue him into "just one" Demerol. Cross-arc reading: the sad wraith reads as JOI (dead ~YDAU); the younger wraith is ambiguous. The wraith's identity and the live/die crux are NOT resolved here — as printed.
